Acne Rosacea Acne rosacea is a type of acne vulgaris that is accompanied by red patches on the skin, red cysts, spider veins and in some cases a reddish tint in the eye. Enlarged noses can occur and this happens mostly to men. There is no cure for acne rosacea and the exact cause for acne rosacea is unknown. People usually affected are those with fair skin and of English or Scottish descent. Flare ups of this disease can occur at any time. Laser Therapy Acne Rosacea can be treated by various methods and depends on the severity of symptoms. Laser therapy, through the use of laser pulsed light, is a common form of treating acne rosacea. It can rid the skin of spots, blemishes, red patches and noticeable blood vessels. Treatments usually take more than one session however the side effects are minimal. Often the appearance of acne rosacea is drastically decreased.
Different types of lasers are used to treat rosacea, such as the ND:YAG laser, the pulsed-dye laser, and KTP laser. These lasers can address redness and flushing and are highly effective in treating the red lines and spider veins (telangietasis) that appear when the tiny blood vessels under the skin become enlarged. Erbium:YAG lasers and CO2 lasers are sometimes used to help remove rosacea symptoms such thickening of the skin on the nose and cheeks (rhinophyma). What to Expect from Laser Therapy Treatment? Laser treatments can be slightly uncomfortable, but are not painful. The discomfort is so mild that use of topical numbing creams are not necessary. Everyone’s pain threshold is different, however complaints of pain are rare. No downtime is associated with laser treatment and patients can return to normal activities immediately. There will be some redness after treatment and that usually lasts for an hour or two. Swelling is also possible and typically lasts anywhere from two to six hours, but can lingers for up to four days. Purpura, or bruising of the skin is another possible side effect and can take four to seven days to go away. How Does Laser Treatment Work? ![]() Vascular lasers emit wavelengths of light that target tiny blood vessels under the skin effectively removing visible blood vessels. These lasers can also reduce extensive redness. The heat from the laser's energy builds in the blood vessels, thus causing them to disintegrate. The number of treatments required depends on the severity of redness and visibility of blood vessels. Vascular lasers may also be used to help prevent the buildup of excess tissue. In severe cases where rosacea has enlarged the nose, a CO2 laser may be used to remove the unwanted tissue and to reshape the nose. IPL laser technology generates multiple wavelengths and treats a broader spectrum of the tissue. Success Rates Success rates for laser therapy of acne rosacea have been reported up to 75%, but other studies indicate different levels of success. Laser therapy is not recommended for everyone especially for those with dark skin or a tan. It is also contraindicated for people who have disorders such as blood clotting, people who scar (keloids) easily, or people with insulin-dependent diabetes. Even though results can be very positive, laser therapy is not a cure. Relapses are always possible and in some cases use of laser therapy can make rosacea worse.
