Common Laser TreatmentsThere are many different types of lasers, with each having its own intensity, color, and purpose when it comes to assisting with medical problems. With recent advances in laser technology, laser treatment has become the preferred method for assisting with a wide number of cosmetic problems and blemishes. Port Wine Stains: Port-wine stains are reddish birthmarks that appear in about .3% of the population. These birthmarks are caused by an over-abundance of blood vessels in the skin. Port Wine Stains can be removed with the Pulsed Dye Laser (Vasculite) and Carbon Dioxide Laser. The pulsed dye laser can penetrate the skin very deeply, which makes it possible for it to target the red pigment and blood vessels causing the appearance of the port-wine stains. They require multiple sittings, but the results are very satisfying. Spider Nevi: Spider Nevi go by many different names and they include spider angiomas or telangiectasias. When there is a single lesion it is called a spider nevus, when multiple- nevi. These can be treated with the Pulsed Dye Laser and Long Pulsed Nd YAG Laser. The Nd YAG laser pierces the skin and penetrates the superficial blood vessel. The heat generated from the laser coagulates the blood inside the vessel causing it to collapse and seal.Lesions on the face can be treated with the KTP laser. Warts: Warts are a viral infection caused by the Human Papiloma virus. They can be effectively removed by the Carbon Dioxide or Pulsed Dye Laser. The pulse dye laser removes a wide range of warts that are resistant to traditional therapies, without presenting a high risk of scarring. Typically, more than two thirds of warts caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) can be cleared using pulse dye laser therapy. Treatment areas include fingers, finger nails, face and feet. Scars: Keloid Scars are firm, raised and reddish-purple scars that extend beyond the initial wound area and build over time. Hypertrophic Scars are firm, raised and pink scars that remain within the initial wound area and may fade over time. Atrophic Scars are depressed pin-like pockets in the skin that can result from skin conditions or diseases such as acne. Such as acne scars or ice pick scars are resurfaced with the Erbium YAG laser or Carbon Dioxide Laser. Hypertrophic scars are flattened with the Pulsed Dye Laser. Moles and Nevi: Moles are small marks that can appear anywhere on the skin. Usually brown in color, they can be found alone or in groups. It is possible, however, for moles to be dark blue, black, or a pinkish flesh color. In addition, they can be flat, raised, or round and come in a variety of colors. Moles are removed for medical or cosmetic reasons using the Carbon Dioxide, Ruby or Erbium YAG Laser depending on the type. Pulsed Dye Lasers are also used to treat "Giant Pigmented Nevi.". Lentigenes: Age spots are removed using Ruby Lasers. Hair Removal: Temporary or long term has become a much easier task with the advent of lasers. Largely, laser hair removal gives excellent results in fair skinned people. Listed below are a few lasers used for hair removal.
The laser light is absorbed by hair follicles, and spares other skin appendages. Cooling devices further prevent heat damage to the rest of the skin. Laser hair removal needs multiple sessions. Regrowth of hair after each session may take from 3 months to up to a year. The regrowth is thinner, slower and scantier after each session. Resurfacing: Laser resurfacing is a popular option in the family of ablative (wounding) skin resurfacing techniques. The procedure removes aged or sun-damaged skin to allow younger looking skin to grow in its place. Laser resurfacing involves an intense light beam that treats damaged surface skin. The procedure can help wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, face blemishes, stretch marks, scars, sun damage and hyperpigmentation. Fractional lasers like and Active FX can target specific problem areas. Over 400,000 laser skin resurfacing treatments were performed last year. Carbon Dioxide Lasers and Erbium YAG Lasers are used for laser ablation. Q - switched Nd YAG lasers are used for non-ablative resurfacing. Laser Tattoo Removal: Tattoos are difficult to treat. Q-Switched Ruby Lasers and Nd YAG Lasers are effective. Multiple sessions over many months may be required to obtain favorable results. The color of the tattoo and the depth of the pigment influence the duration and the outcome of the laser treatment. The Q-switched Ruby Laser has been used successfully for thousands of treatment worldwide. Although there may be some temporary lightening of the surrounding skin, this treatment does not affect normal surrounding skin structures because only the tattoo ink absorbs the laser light. |
